Day 1
We left Orem at 8:30 AM arriving in Moab around 11 AM. After we set up camp I took the three oldest on a ride down Gemini bridges. My wife dropped us off and we rode down hill. My children loved the bridges and we all laid down and gazed over the veritcal void. On the climb out we were fortunate enough to see two mountain goats. After the ride we swam in the Slickrock Campground pool,
Day 2
We decided to take everyone, including, three dogs up cable arch. There is no established trail to this arch, but I would highly recommend it. The route up is a little difficult for young children, including a short highly steep and exposed almost cliff like climb. But we all made it without incident. After the climb it's a chort 5 minute hike to the arch. However the fun part of the arch is climbing the cable on the left to the top. I took up three of my children ( J (12), E (10), C(8)) After some exploring and amazing views up top we went back to camp for lunch. My brother got there so we decided to go into arches to a rarely visited, untrailed area called "Herdina Park". Getting to Herdina is an adventure for kids. Turning on the dirt road opposite of Balanced rock we drove 1.7 miles to another dirt road on the right. "Salt Wash" I think it was called. We jumped in the back of my Brother's for wheel truck (you need clearance and four wheel) with all the kids and drove for about 2 miles to the sign of the eye of the whale arch. They loved the ride in the back of the truck.
Reaching the Eye of Whale is a short hike, to see "the eye" it's better to view from the other side. We hiked through the eye and then began to explore Herdina park more. There was no trail, but I had found some gps coordinates on Backpacker.com. We went left and spent four hours exploring the park. This is now my favorite location in Arches. We spent 2 hours exploring, over 4 miles and never saw or heard another person. My dad slid down one part. It was awesome and the kids loved it. Here are some pictures of the park.
After all that we went back to camp and ate dinner followed by more swimming in the pool.
Day 3
The kids wanted to do one of their favorites; Corona Arch. We took all the dogs, which are always a pain, but after a short hike we arrived. We let the kids play for a while then headed back for lunch. Following lunch we decided to go on a short hike up Moonflower canyon to a small pool where the kids played. Following the hike out we climbed the indian chimney, which is a crack in the rock face that allows you to climb up thirty-forty feet to the top of a small mesa. Only J and I made it to the top, but it was a fun experience allowing them all to try. Even Dawn got into the fun.
Day 4 - The Drive home
We woke up early sunday morning, packed up and drove home. The only exciting event was the traditional stop at the Dinosaur park in Price, UT. The kids loved it there and with a lot of grass and picnic tables it's a great place to stop. Over all one of the best Moab trips we've had. Sun every day and temp's in the mid seventies...perfect.
